Is CBD oil good for glaucoma? Currently, in the United States, more than 3 million people have glaucoma, and over 60 million worldwide. The National Eye Institute projects this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase. So what can be done about it? I will provide you with a few tips and whether or not taking CBD oil would be a viable option for you to consider if you have glaucoma.
What Is The Cause Of Glaucoma
According to The National Eye Institute, scientists are not really sure what causes glaucoma other than a build-up of pressure caused by fluid not being able to drain normally out of the eye. However, not everyone who has higher eye pressure will develop glaucoma. It depends on how much pressure your optic nerve can handle without being damaged. There are basically 4 types of glaucoma.
- Open-Angle Glaucoma
With open-angle glaucoma, the fluid inside your eye releases to slowly, which causes pressure to build up and cause damage to the optic nerve resulting in vision loss.
- Normal-Tension Glaucoma
Scientists are baffled by this type of glaucoma because your eye pressure can be healthy. The only thing they can come up with is that your optic nerve is more sensitive than most peoples, but lowering the pressure even further could slow down or prevent more damage to your eyes.
- Angle-Closure Glaucoma
With angle-closure glaucoma, the fluid inside your eye gets blocked by the iris and isn’t able to drain whatsoever, which can result in intense eye pain and blurry vision. Seek Medical Help Immediately!
- Congenital Glaucoma
Congenital glaucoma sometimes occurs with a newborn baby. The baby has a problem with its eyes, and the fluid drains more slowly than usual. But there is a strong chance for the baby to have good vision if the baby is diagnosed soon enough and undergoes surgery.
The Latest Research For Glaucoma
The latest research for glaucoma at the University of South Florida recently discovered a feedback pathway from the brain to the eye that modulates eye pressure. It is a significant advancement in the effort to diagnose and treat glaucoma.
It has been speculated that brain pressure might also play a role in glaucoma because the amount of strain on the optic nerve depends not just on eye pressure, but the difference in pressure between the eye and brain.
This groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Physiology shows, for the first time, that eye and brain pressure are physiologically connected. This discovery could lead to new treatment options for glaucoma.
Is CBD Oil Good For Glaucoma
Standard treatment options for glaucoma include.
- Prostaglandis Eye drops.
- Alpha-adrenergic agonists
- Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
- Hyperosmotic agents
With so many mixed reviews about whether or not CBD oil is good for glaucoma leaves a person with a sense of not knowing if they should try it or not. Since the re-introduction of hemp back into America in 2018, it will be quite sometime before the scientific research catches up with all of the benefits people are experiencing with using CBD oils.
Because the science has not caught up yet to all of the benefits of CBD oil, I can not say for certain that CBD oil will or will not help for glaucoma. All I can say is that CBD is a potent antioxidant that helps reduce problems associated with oxygen stress and share with you my brother’s experience with using CBD for his glaucoma.
My Brothers Experience With CBD For Glaucoma
When my brother was first diagnosed with glaucoma, his eye pressure was 30 an 29. The eye doctor started him on eye drops, and his pressure dropped down to 19 and 18, and that’s where it remained for the last 5 years.
He asked his eye doctor if CBD oil would help, and his doctor replied that it couldn’t hurt. So, he decided to start using CBD oil to see if it would make any difference. He started taking CBD oil about 5 months before his next eye examination, and his eye pressure had dropped down further to 12 and 14. His doctor was pleased with the results.
He started out with using a 500mg isolate CBD oil without THC for the first couple of months. Someone told him that CBD oil with the THC was better for glaucoma, so he switched over to a 750mg full-spectrum CBD oil for the remaining time before his next eye examination.
To be honest, I don’t know if the 500mg isolate without the THC would have done the job or if it was switching over to the 750mg full-spectrum that achieved the great results. Either way, I say it is worth giving CBD oil a try.
